TOPIC: Polemos GdD - detailed play example |
Hi, as requested I've written a detailed example of play for Polemos General de Division here if anyone has read the rulebook and wondered how it all fits together. Comments and constructive criticism more than welcome.

This should be very useful to a new gamer so they can "iron out" any bugs with using the Polemos rules. My own preference right now is using the MdE rules, I use 40mm and 20mm squares for base sizes and Irr Min 2mm blocks (painted!) for the figures. At present it's a work in progress. |
No worries, pleased to have been able to help. |
Thank you. But I am afraid I don't quite understand the question. Could you explain a little further please? |
Okay, I understand Jonathan. Yes. When you have two players, it is rather easier, because the modifiers are marked for both sides and each player. For example: (Attacking) French Player roll: 3 (Defending) Austrian player roll: 5 Then imagine from the "both sides" section (i.e. modifiers affect both sides): +1 French (supported by infantry) total: 4 +2 Austrians (supported by artillery) total: 7 From "defenders only" section +1 Austrians (secure flank) total: 8 -3 Austrians (intend to fire at point blank range): total 5 From "attackers only" section +1 French (SK1 against SK0) :total 5 So, French total is 5, Austrian total is 5. Result is a draw, defender may act as ordered. In Polemos it is the simple difference between the scores that counts, so it doesn't matter if only one side does the counting. So I prefer to start from the difference between the two dice rolls and then apply the modifiers after that. It sounds like: rolls 5 (Attacker) and 3 (Defender) so...attacker +2...attacker +4...attacker +3...attacker +1...attacker +4. Attacker wins by 4 (and that is exactly the same as saying defender loses by 4). It does matter in the DBx series of games which are otherwise quite similar, where you have to keep track of the two separate absolute scores. Does that make things clearer? All the best John

Hello Whirlwind, We post this question on your Blog and find after this thread. How do you know the general grade? We don't see any on the Napoleonic Companion... Thanks for helping ! Okay, for the grade of Generals: The army generators have them, both in the main rulebook and in the companion, for random generation Chris refused to do them in the scenarios - he didn't want to get into arguments about them IIRC! When I am playing a scenario from a magazine, or writing my own, then I will just either use the closest random generator, or convert them from another system (e.g. Grande Armee has a long list, so does Tomb for an Empire which I used for my Peninsular War refight), or make them up out of my own prejudices. If doing the latter, I will try and default to 'Capable' unless there is a good reason not to. |
