Questions about Polemos GNW

Hello everyone,

I've tried playing some small games of Polemos GNW and have qutie a few questions regarding the rules.

Does it cost TP to charge for units of GH, CI and GP? If it does, how much does it, and what is that number based on. In the example for charging, a brigade of Swedish horse (GH) is given 2TP to charge, is this in accordance to the TP usage of "To move a group of bases" in the non-Tempo phase, or "To move a Group of bases to close musket range or contact, not GH, CI, GP." If it is the latter, what does the "not GH, CI, GP" part mean gameplay wise.

Do you need to charge at a right angle at your enemy? If you don't, how are combats fought between a line that hits another line at a 45 degree angle at a front corner?

The next problem is probably easier to see with an image.

So here a unit of Swedish GP infantry is charging a unit of RS infantry. The three Swedish bases are positioned so that the Russian bases can all fire at one of two bases. The Swedes declare their charges with each base declaring to the ones with arrows. How do the charge tests happen? Does the rightmost Russian base get to affect the charge in anyway? Does it get to shoot closing fire? If the Swedish base has to test against both to charge, what happens if one Russian base breaks and flees, and another stands strong and stalls the Swedish charge.

Now lets say that the leftmost Swedish base charges the leftmost Russian base, which breaks and flees. The Swedish unit fails its Pursuit test, and needs to pursue. Does the Swedish unit charge the remaining Russian unit whose base is half in front of it?

The next question is on Pursuits. If a base breaks and falls back and hits an obstacle that it cannot avoid by moving to a gap (say a stream or a wall surrounding a field), does it need to spend movement as normal to go over it. If it does, and doesn't have sufficient movement, does it simply stop in front of it and move over it in its the next rout move? If a base pursues this routing base and catches it at this obstacle, is the routing base simply removed and no more pursuit tests are needed by the pursuer?

If anyone could help clarify some of these problems for me it would help out a ton!

Hi Matti,

I certainly hope I can help you.

On TP cost I am afraid there is an error in the example. For GH, CI and GP units charging is a 'normal' move and would cost 1 or 2 TP, rather than 2 or 3 TP for other units.

On charging at an angle the Swedish unit declare charges on the units they want to attack. One of the units will charge 2 of the opposing Russians units because of the way they are postioned. So in your diagram the left & centre Swedes would charge 1 Russian unit each and the right hand unit would charge the other two.

You would then do the charge tests with the right hand unit doing the procedure on page 36 part 14 Multiple Unit Combat. This could lead to both the Russian units targeted by the right hand Swedish unit firing but as the results are done for each unit it might not.

If one of the Russian units breaks but the Swedish charge stalls then you apply all the results. So the Russian unit breaks but the Swedish unit does not pursue as it has stalled. It will now be in short range of the remaining  Russian unit. The Swedish unit would only roll for pursuit if both Russian units break.

Routing units move at full speed and ignore any terrrain effects. Pursuing units would need to spend movement as normal. In effect the routing unit is just running for it as individuals. The pursuing unit is trying to stay as a formation of some kind.

Hopefully that answers your questions but if not then please write again. Indeed get in touch again if you need help on anything.

All the best,

Nick
