![]() Standard User Posts: 255 TreesDavid Kay 17th Apr 2025 07:41:17 What sources / suppliers are used for trees to model woods and forests? With a bigger playing surface I need some more! I was disappointed that there were not any suitable suppliers at Salute last week and I have not found a model railway shop in the vicinity that seems to stock them. So potentially I have to order on-line but would like to get some recommendations before doing so. Thanks. |
I have found alder cones to be a free and ready supply for 6mm deciduous trees in leaf. Glue to a base, singly or in groups, then paint. I have sttled on Vallejo Olive Green, then drybrush Vallejo Green Yellow. Tried different ideas before fixing on a colour scheme so some of the trees in my photo look a bit different. However, not all trees are the same green, so mixing up the greens and yellows gives a more realistic appearance. Orange, brown and yellow mixes are also good for autumnal foliage. A little goes a long way |

Just stiffen with PVA and drybrush a lighter shade or shades of green, texture the rim to suit, and bosh! Also runs you what, a tenner for the whole thing and trust me: 24" by 30" goes a LONG way to covering the table. |

I also use some felt to represent the area of the woods with the trees or little forest on top…….

![]() Standard User Posts: 255 TreesDavid Kay 18th Apr 2025 07:14:23 Thanks for the feedback. I don't have enough time or enthusiasm to grow my own trees. Sticking them on to the hexes and then flocking is about my limit. Mort, were the trees you bought from ronny8664 any good? |
![]() Standard User Posts: 67 TreesMort53 18th Apr 2025 02:38:32 I think they are good. The ones I have range from about 30-50mm in height. I'm looking at getting some bigger ones to cover my 15mm scale figures. I'll do my best to upload a couple of pictures over the weekend with Baccus figures and the the trees.....

![]() Standard User Posts: 44 Treesjwsleser 29th Apr 2025 06:17:16 I have used trees from Woodland Scenics. I mix trees from their Mixed Green Colors Deciduous Trees TR1570 (1.9cm-5.08cm) 38 Trees in a pack, and TR1571 (5.08cm-7.62cm) 23 Trees in a pack. I glue them on painted cardboard bases in various irregular sizes and shapes. I made unit markers to indicate where units are when they enter a forested area. This is less fussy/fiddly than moving the trees out of the way, or lifting the top off the forest. v/r Jeff
