When it comes to shields, it really depends on the type and level of detail involved. For example, my Zulu shields were fairly straightforward,I used the 00 brush for those. For the Fatimid shields, I used the 000 brush to add just a few dots of color. If I were doing Roman shields or anything more intricate, I’d probably go with decals instead. That said, I’m also looking into trying out acrylic fine-point pens for my Samurai banners. I have decals for them too, but I plan to hand-paint some of the lesser troops with simple details, just a few dots or lines here and there. Pretty much the same as Mort (although I don't have a surviving 000 brush any more). I've tried the fine-point pens and they are just great for simple dots and straight lines on a smooth plain background. But if there's any texture on the field - intentional or otherwise - it can go horribly wrong. I also found they didn't do so well if you change direction when drawing. So they should be great for simple Kanji on banners, but not so good for heraldry! Altera Restat |
