Obviously if your friends or club mates are using a certain size of base then matching up with them is the best way to go. If your planning to move into other periods at some point in time then a more popular base size would be a good choice. This allows you to use the same type of storage boxs, etc. It also gives you a basic model to mount your figures. As previously mentioned the most popular base size in the horse and musket period is the 60mm x 30mm. It is also used in other periods as well. The other popular base size in ancients is the 40mm x 20mm. Although your looking for flexibilty in basing some rules are very specific when it comes to basing. So before you decided on any basing I suggest you first nail down the rules you will be playing. From there see which one works the best for you. Your 50mm x 25mm, the 60mm x 30mm or the 40mm x 20mm. The other factor to take into consideration is how the figures are sold and packaged. Baccus sells their figures to match up to their basing 60mm x 30mm. So using their basing will minimize your shortage/overage problems. Best regards, Glenn |
![]() Standard User Posts: 5 Proper base sizes?Archon 29th Oct 2021 06:48:57 I have sent away for some 25x25mm bases and a sprue cutter. I really like your suggestion of the dice frame with different coloured dice to represent unit strength. I shall look into it. Thank you... Regards, John |

The rulesets I am intererested in right now are Hannibal at the Gates, Age of Hannibal, Hail Ceasar or Wars of the Republic by Osprey when it is published. I am not sure which ruleset I will decide to play but these ones claim to be base agnostic. Thanks for your help, if Baccus is best with 60mm by 30mm I should look into it... Regards, John |
![]() Standard User Posts: 5 Proper base sizes?Archon 29th Oct 2021 09:54:44 I have followed your advice Glenn and cancelled my order for 25x25mm bases. I have ordered 60x30mm bases instead. I decided to purchase the sprue cutter as well because you never know when you will need it... Regards, John |

You will need the cutter to seperate cavalry and light infantry. If your new to basing you might want to consider obtaining the Baccus basing kit. Easy to learn with professional results. Good selection of rules, one will gradually rise to the surface as your favourite. One of many things I like about the 60x30 bases is it gives you the opportunity to be as creative as you like (rules permitting) in how you mount your figures. They give you some room to make things look more attractive to you and enhance the overall look of the figures. 6mm figures need some space and attractive terrain to make them slightly more visible. It's also the simplist system you could possible have. Everything gets mounted on the 60x30 except for commanders and some artillery like weapons which you can put on 30mm x 30mm. Only two bases for your entire collection. Couldn't be easier. Anything else I or the collective forum can help you with, just ask. Best regards, Glenn |
