I'm looking for suggestions for proxies for the Mongols.

Particularly the chaps who showed up after the 1st crusade had established the kingdom of Jerusalem.

These will obviously be operating in convunction with the existing Crusading Franks and Saracens.

Probably your best bets would be either the Sassanid Armoured Horse Archers (ASS2) if you want them in armour, or the Huns for more of a steppe look.  I wpuld probably mix the Sassanids with the stationary Huns (AHU2)...

I rather like the look of ASS1 Early Sassanian armoured cavalry (Lance, Bow, mix of unarmoured and caparisoned horses). The caparisoned horses seem a good match for the Mongol "bodyguard" with armoured horses - and let's face it, we all want a bit of the heaviest troops available.

Can anybody help me with the ratio of unarmoured to caparisoned horses?

I'd use the unarmoured ones as the Heavy/Medium cavalry lancers.
