Thanks for the tip on the FPW tunic figures. They do look like they will work. I actually have some of those already, so will give a strip a try out. A little goes a long way |
Whoops! They turned out to be Regiment de Marche in Greatcoat, but the head does look as though it will work for the Japanese cap. I'll get some im my next order to see how I do with them. A little goes a long way |

The distinction in headgear, especially between the French Chasseurs’ kepi and the Japanese “Dutch boy” style cap, is indeed crucial for authenticity in 6mm figures. Getting the caps and packs right makes all the difference visually since these elements stand out the most at such a small scale, and good painting can then blend the rest seamlessly. Regarding artillery, your points about field guns are well taken. Using ACW Parrott guns for the Russians is a clever workaround given the lack of perfect matches, and it makes sense that the Japanese proxies will have to compromise with single-trail breechloaders, since the Type 31 Arisaka's uniqueness is hard to replicate. The mix of prewar and khaki uniforms reflecting actual wartime attire adds depth, and the fact that khaki was often summer cotton while the wool uniforms continued in use aligns perfectly with historical photos. Indeed, as you say, trial and error will be part of the journey, but the small figure scale helps to mask minor inaccuracies, making your approach both practical and historically mindful.

As I use a painting service, I hope to have the figures by the end of September. I ordered the ACW Parrott for the M1900 and the FPW French 12pdr Reserve Artillery for the Type 31. I will see how well they work. WWI Russian Uhlans for the Siberian cavalry as they carried lances. The challenge for the Japanese cavalry is finding figures that are offered as both mounted and dismounted, so gave the WW1 early French chasseurs a try. I will modify the colonial RN Gatling Guns for Russian Maxims, while the French early war Hotchkiss will work just fine. I will have the East Siberians in white tunics and dark green trousers, while the first Siberian units wil be khaki tunics and dark green trousers. The first European units will be in the regulation dark green uniform. That will work well for the early part of the war. Additional units will be a mix of colors. I will chose a figure to modify as a standard bearer. The Japanese will all be in the dark blue uniforms with later units in a mix. The French cmd has a standard bearer, so no mod needed. |
